Hello and Welcome

Our Aim

The Stichting Humanitaire Hulp Gambia-België f.v. (SHHG) is the Belgian partner of the Stichting Humaniaire Hulp Gambia in Nederland. For more than ten years the Dutch foundation has been active in providing aid in The Gambia in two areas.  Firstly by sponsoring on an educational level through the schools at Bakadaji and Nafugan; secondly on a medical level through the Health Centres in Bakadaji (Saint Vitus) and in Somita.
The Belgian branch works on a totally voluntary basis.  All collected funds are entirely used for the project.  In Belgium organizations such as ours are grouped in to a 4de pijler (not bilateral, multi-lateral or NGO) group brought together by the Belgian Government.

In The Gambia the SHHG is represented by a local foundation – Foundation Humanitarian Aid Gambia – which is officially recognized as a NGO by the Gambian Government.

Members of SHHG-Belgium have been sponsors of the SHHG-NL for a number of years. They have also travelled to The Gambia on several occasions to visit the projects of the SHHG-NL. Our last visit dates to November/December 2008. You can read a report of this visit in our newsletter.

The Gambia, a former British colony, is one of the smallest countries on the African continent with about 1.6 million inhabitants. Located on both banks of the Gambia River, it measures from West to East about 350 km and North to South approximately 50 km. Except for the coastal area, the nation is entirely enveloped by French-speaking Senegal. The Gambia has no natural resources. Most Gambians survive from day to day.  Most parents cannot afford to send all their children to school.
