The weather gods were incredibly benign on Saturday 16 May!  On Thursday and Friday rain came down in buckets and changed the street where Rita and Frakke live into a stream of mud.  More rain was forecast … but on Saturday the skies remained dry.  At the start of the event grey clouds loomed, but one hour later the sun even made an appearance.  Therefore the concert was able to take place outdoors while the guests walked about in the garden.

Ellen and Arthur, the Dutch founders of the Foundation Humanitarian Aid Gambia, and Manon had driven from The Netherlands to be with us.  Pat, our Chairman, explained to the guests, approximately 80 in number, that establishing a vegetable garden in Nafugan is an urgent necessity: the economic crisis is also affecting people in The Gambia; therefore growing vegetables has become a priority.

The folk group “Wreed en Plezant” played fantastically.  Many guests sang along with the songs that in the olden days were performed at markets by roaming musicians.

Snacks and drinks vanished quickly; the aprons sold like hot cakes and even a few crocodiles escaped from their enclosure.
Photographs from our trips were shown; brochures were distributed.  We talked and explained passionately about The Gambia and the projects of the SHHG.

It was heartwarming to welcome so many willing to sponsor our project.  Thank you to you all.  We also have to thank Frakke and Rita for the use of their lovely home and garden.  Equally we thank Marc, Johan and Frakke, the members of “Wreed en Plezant”, for their musical contribution.  It was a truly memorable day.
